In this week's podcast, Cardinal O'Brien's resignation, the trouble within the Lib Dems, the Vicky Pryce jury, the result of the Glasgow University 'referendum, the loss of the AAA status, the calls for 'more Europe' by the German President - need we say more ? Of course, it is a podcast....

There are no easy answers to inappropriate behaviour. I would agree, unpleasant as it always is inappropriate behaviour should be sorted out as soon as it occurs; but you cannot hope ever to get to the situation where inappropriate behaviour never takes place. In the case of the Cardinal one wonders whether it would ever have got to the state where he had to resign if he had never suggested that celibacy for the priesthood should be abandoned. Celibacy, while it is quite clear why it was introduced, must be the principal cause of inappropriate behaviour in the Catholic Hierarchy. There is of course different interpretations of what is inappropriate in different communities.
To the 12% participation in the mock Referendum at Glasgow University β or as Lesley says 88% non-participation it only illustrates the apathy of students to main-stream politics. Looking at an article in Guardian the 2581 votes was significantly greater than to 1,000 to 1,500 expected anyway.
Itβs not only in this country that there is apathy β just look at the vote received by Beppe Grillo in Italy β and perhaps inappropriateness has relevance in Italy also.

Joyce McMillan: 'Still groping around for an answer' in Friday's Scotsman - yes there is no easy answer to 'inappropriate behavior' but a sensible /balanced article

The Church closes ranks - there will be no change. Not the same, but the Jesuits were expelled from South America because they broke ranks and established self supporting Communities rather than Colonies

To my last comment - it looks as though the Jesuits are back not only in South Americs but it the Vatican itself. Hoepfully as then there will now be emphasis on helping the poor throughout the world
