Riddoch on the Outer Hebrides
In the summer of 2006, Lesley Riddoch cycled the length of the Outer Hebrides, from Barra to the Butt of Lewis. She met an amazing set of characters; posties, weavers, story tellers and shamanic astrologers to name but a few. The radio programmes broadcast on BBC Radio Scotland were very popular. On the trip Lesley took lots of photos and scrawled lots of notes; promising herself that she would write a book. Well, Lesley has now written that book. With her own brand of feisty questions and warm humour, Lesley manages to share both insight and incidents of the Outer Hebrides journey.
Well-informed, well-observed, provocative, hard-headed, wrong-headed and inspired in equal measure. --Malcolm MacLean, Gaelic Arts Agency
If you love the Outer Hebrides, this book is for you. If you don't know the Outer Hebrides, then this book will persuade of the pleasures that await you from Barra to the Butt.
The original bike journey was broadcast in 13 parts during the summer of 2006 and had a devoted following of Hebridean lovers, cyclists and Lesley's listeners.
As a special bonus, Lesley is making two of the On the Bike programmes available here.
In the first, Lesley visits Uig and learns about the Brahan Seer, Lewis Chessmen and, along with Dougie MacLean, has a night at the Callanish Stones with some shamanic astrologers.
In the second extract from the On the Bike series, Lesley is in North Harris and meets two DJs and learns a lot about weaving.
Enjoy and let us know what you think. The book is available in all good book shops or directly from the publishers, Luath Press
